1970 Began as Radio Harlow with equipment donated by members
and local companies. Most members were from either the
local church, St. Pauls, or the League of Friends.
1971 Registered as a charity and called Harlow Hospital Radio.
Began broadcasting April using the hospital’s radio room
with 3 “D.J’S” and 2 technicians on 3 evenings a week.
1972 Had 6 D.J’S and 11 trainees so increased to 4 nights a
week also began broadcasting back to the wards via a shared
landline with the church. Members began to hold dances,
whist drives, etc. to raise funds.
1974 Weekend broadcasting began.
1978 Crisis year. Equipment breaking down and no money.
1979 New equipment obtained and installed, and in September
moved to new studio in basement.
1981 Second-hand caravan donated for use on roadshows.
1982 D.J’s were allowed to hire out spare equipment in order to
do discos, dances etc. to fundraise.
1982 New training programme begun.
1984 Crisis again, due to shortage of members dropped broadcasting to 3 evenings, but carried on with training.
1986 First duck race at Harlow Mill held.
1987 Campaign for funds to buy O.B. vehicle which was received
in April. Also, Annual awards introduced and the biggest
event of all, the Gospel Festival organised. Very good
year this was, with computer in studio, own telephone line.
1988 O.B. vehicle restoration completed and in use. After Princess
Alexandra ‘opened’ it. Also purchased answerphone for studio.
1989 Inventory of records begun.
1990 Major repairs done on O.B. vehicle. Also launched new
hospital magazine. Sponsorship video made available.
1991 NAHBO meeting held at PAH. Charity car drive produced a new
computer for studio. Training programme re-introduced and
training day altered to Sunday. Sponsorship deals with Canon
cinema and Boots launched.
1992 Show log introduced, new shelving done in studio then giant
re-fit with separate studio and new mixer. Launched second
edition of magazine.
